Description
Predominatly 1890 and 1891 Orders for the commitment and discharge of prisoners. Most are for vagrancy and issued by a Justice of the Peace, but some orders are from the Court of Quarter Sessions for criminal cases. Information usually includes: name of inmate, charge unpon which committed, names of persons making the charge; name of the Justice of the Peace, date of commitment, and prison number (or commitment number) assigned. Commitment orders may be directed to the Keeper of the Jail or as a custody order to a named constable. Bail and Recognizance verification may also be present. Discharge Orders from the Court of Quarter Sessions usually include the following information: name of inmate to be discharged and inmate number; date of court proceedings and presiding Judge; the charge, findings of the grand jury, and signature of a court official; and name of Sheriff and date of document. Note 1. Grand Jury Reports often provide comments regarding vagrants and tramps. 1890s has a report with witnesses regarding review for a work program.
