APPEARANCE DOCKET Name Change and Special Petitions

Description

In addition to civil cases, many special issues are recorded in the Appearance (Civil Case) Dockets and Suits Dockets with assigned case numbers to access Papers.

By the early 1900s (circa 1911), many special issues are indexed by a category or form, such as Petitions or Charters. Below are the different types under "P" for petitions.

1. ADMISSION TO THE BAR: Permanent.

2. ADOPTION: Permanent. In 1925 responsibility of Orphans’ Court.

3. APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIAN: Permanent. Most guardian appoints with Orphans’ Court.

4. BALLOT BOX OPENING: Permanent.

5. CONDEMNATION: of land particularly for State roads. Permanent for Complaint and/or Declaration of Taking, appointment of Board of View and Final Order. Miscellaneous papers can be disposed of after two years after expiration of appeal process or termination in the record.

6. DECLARATORY JUDGMENT: Permanent. If judgment does not affect title to real estate, retain 2 years after expiration of appeal period or termination on the record.

7. DIVORCE AND ANNULMENT: Permanent. See State’s County Records Manual for list and list of papers that need retention for5 years after Final Decree.

8. EJECTMENT: Permanent unless relates to evictions.

9. FICTITIOIUS NAME: After 1983, filed with Department of State.

10. INSOLVENCY: Permanent. Especially Insolvent Debtors.

11. INVOLUNTARY DISSOLUTION: Permanent.

12. MORTGAGE FORECLOSURE: Permanent.

13. NAME CHANGE: Permanent.

14. OTHER Special Petitions not regularly entered. Example: Substitute Trustee for Public Graveyard.

15. PATERNITY: Permanent.

16. PEDDLER LICENSE: Permanent. Most HAWKERS AND PEDDLERS LICENSES are filed with the Clerk of Courts.

17. QUIET TITLE (clarifying ownership title of something): Permanent.

18. SALE OF PROPERTY: Permanent. Such as County’s unseated land, School Districts, Churches, etc.

19. SPECIAL POLICEMEN: Permanent.

20. STRIKING TAXES: Permanent.

21. TRUSTS INTER VIVOS (Living Will): Permanent. Currently filed with the Orphans’ Court.
