TAX ASSESSOR DUPLICATES

Description

Original tax assessors' Duplicates which recorded tax assessors' or assistant tax assessors' assessments for tax rate determination, appeals, and collection. Information includes names of taxpayers and amount of taxes. Instructions, names and oaths by tax assessors and tax assessor assistants are in many of the volumes, as well as the names of persons nominated to be tax collectors. Some duplicates are specialized for Effective Supply Tax, Additional Supply Tax, and Specie to Paper conversion opportunity offered the taxpayer in 1781. Duplicates used by Tax Collectors for Appeal notifications are also filed here.

Note 1: As originals, these soft bound booklets and loose papers often include notes and corrections NOT in the final copy of the Tax Rate Books (persons moved, persons married, etc.).

Note 2: 1763 is more complete than the Tax Rate Book with many categories assessed (number of servants, sheep, etc.).

Arrangement: Chronological by year and therein alphabetical by municipality. Assessors mostly arranged taxpapers

alphabetically by surname. At the end of a duplicate, Freemen are listed and in later years slaves.
